How to choose a WMS: assessment, sizing and vendor shortlist
A WMS is only as good as its fit to your throughput, layout and integrations. This guide covers the 5 assessment axes and the 15 questions to ask every vendor before signing.
Assessment axes
Warehouse profile (sqm, SKU count, lot/expiry, hazmat, cold chain). Throughput (peak orders/day, lines/order, receipts/day). Mobile terminals (Zebra/Honeywell/Datalogic, Android 11+). Shipping & e-Transport. ERP/OMS integration.
Pilot & timing
Always run a 4-week pilot in one zone with real staff before full rollout. Typical implementation: 2-4 months for a distribution warehouse, 4-8 months for 3PL or multi-site. Payback 8-14 months.
